How are the cPanel and WHM Different from Each Other?

When you have bought any web hosting plan for your business, you will be provided with a tool which will help you manage the services better. The cPanel and Web Host Manager or WHM are two such necessary tools for hosting services. They help users assume control over hosting solutions. But, when you buy a hosting plan, you need to know exactly what the functions of the cPanel and WHM are. This will help you know where the differences between the two lie and which is better suited for your website.

How do the cPanel and WHM differ from one another?

Features: To start with, the cPanel is basically an online control panel which can help users handle Linux hosting plans. Using the cPanel therefore, any user can take charge of administrative tasks associated with hosting his site. These may be creating email accounts, managing email accounts, creating the site design, resetting passwords and installing email-forwards, adding domains or sub-domains, uploading files etc. The cPanel will also allow you to manage distinct hosting accounts and end users can even check the site statistics or manage backups and databases.

In comparison, the WHM is really an administrative tool. It is meant for the backend of any cPanel account. Using the WHM tool, it is possible to create cPanel account. This particular administrative tool will enable users to manage both light and heavy websites. You can even manage many cPanel accounts at the same time, monitor bandwidth use, either upgrade or downgrade the hosting account etc. The WHM will offer administrative control on your virtual servers or dedicated server hosting. It also acts as reseller control panel because it is provided with reseller hosting plans to clients. But the reseller will only have limited rights in their WHM as compared to their rights in WHM of dedicated or VPS servers. Using the WHM it is possible to create individual hosting accounts, custom hosting plans, add new domains, manage hosting plan features, reset passwords, install private nameservers, and even access resold accounts.

Functions: When you use the cPanel, you can manage files with a lot of ease because the Graphic User Interface or GUI is very user-friendly. When you are not keen to use a site builder tool, you should use this GUI and this is exactly why the cPanel is far more popular than its competitors. You can enjoy control across FTP accounts, you may add or move or delete files on a server, and you can get website statistics for a month. Data is completely secure and there are proper backups and data recovery options. It is far more cost-friendly compared to Windows. The WHM will even allow you to create or delete or suspend cPanel accounts. Besides the power to configure or support client requests via the cPanel, it can also allow users to alter domains and the usernames of clients. It enjoys total control over the backend of the cPanel. It lets you set up and manage SSL certificates and create a whitelist of IP addresses. When you have upgraded to the WHM, clients can get alerts and newsletters. The WHM will even monitor the server status and status of resources in it. So, the WHM will basically reduce the time taken for total administration of the server and help you to concentrate on handling customer requirements.

Access: While the Control Panel will offer access to users to the hosting account on the server, the WHM will provide the reseller with root access. When you change passwords for the WHM, passwords for the cPanel account will change automatically. You can even set this password as per your wishes.

Both the cPanel and the WHM have features which may be distinct from one another but they can work in tandem. They offer differences which are important for resellers and end users to know. A serious web hosting service will need a WHM as part of its services. Using this WHM tool, organizing different sites gets easier. Moreover, security management among these multiple sites also gets simpler. The tool is however costly to afford. Those clients who have lesser needs should be able to make do with the cPanel. CPanel also makes site management simpler. CPanel is also very cost-effective and whether you will benefit from this tool or not depends on your needs entirely. CPanel is primarily used for managing websites while the WHM is used for managing multiple cPanels .
