How to configure a remote access server

On configuring a remote access server, you can access to multiple computers at the same time provided these systems share single internet connection, which is usually referred to as “Network Address Translation”. Configuring the server requires some steps to follow, which are highlighted here under:

Step 1:

Allow users to access your computer as this setting is usually deactivated by default. If you want to activate this setting, you are recommended to go to “Start” menu followed by “Control Panel” and eventually “System”. A dialogue box will pop up where you can find “Remote” button as well as a button mentioning “Allow users to connect remotely to your computer”. All you need is to select both these buttons accordingly prior to clicking “OK” and “Exit” buttons of the dialogue box.

Step 2:

Now click on the “configure your server” wizard tool found in Windows Server 2003 before clicking the “Start” menu. On clicking the “Start” button, the recommended steps are go to “Control Panel” and double-click the “Administrative Tools” icon. The first double-click is followed by another double-click on the “Configure Your Server Wizard” icon. This kicks off step by step process to setup the remote access server.

Step 3:

Now you have to set your server roles by clicking on “Add or Remove a Role” tab. You can add more than one role at a time. So, go to the “Next” button to activate the “Remote access/VPN Server Configuration Wizard”.

Step 4:

Subsequently, go to the “Virtual Private Network (VPN) access and NAT selection” found in the “Configuration” page and then press the “Next” button. At the same time, you need to choose the network interface that connects your computer to the Internet on the “VPN Connection” page.

Step 5:

By default, your “IP Address Assignment” is activated automatically and you need to click “Next” to go to the Name and Address Translation Services (NAT) page. The “Enable basic name and address services” tool is activated by default, which cannot be altered.

Step 6:

The address assignment range is created by default on the basis of IP address of the network adapter or router mentioned in the VPN setting.

Step 7:

Press the “Next” button to view the “Routing and Remote Access Server Setup Wizard” information. Peruse the information to ensure that it is correct in order for clicking the “Finish” button to conclude the Wizard. This will help you configure your Remote Access Server.
